Freeing Silvia Baraldini

Freeing Silvia Baraldini tells the story of Italian-born Baraldini,  leader of the May 19th Communist Organization, who was convicted of helping to free Black Panther, Assata Shakur from prison and given a 43 year sentence.

Margo wrote and co-directed the award winning independent documentary for Thin Edge Films with Lisa Thomas in 2008. The documentary featured Baraldini, Melissa Jackson, and Noam Chomsky.

Baraldini’s story is one of the enduring human spirit within resistance movements and the repressive measures waged against them by the United States government.  After seventeen years in U.S. prisons, a ten-year long campaign featuring a million Italian signatures resulted in her sentence being commuted to her homeland, Italy.

The film won accolades at film festivals around the world including: ‘Best Documentary’ at the Harlem International Film Festival; ‘Most Principled Film’ at Seattle True Independent Film Festival; and the ‘Patois Award’ at the New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival.
